Walking through the Forbidden City, where history feels close enough to touch.
I called the Forbidden City the soul of Beijing. There was something in the thought that a place once so out of reach could now be somewhere we walk through and explore.
It felt like history we could open and read for ourselves. That’s the thought behind this chapter: the distance between a place we know from history and the chance to actually be there.

- Use the Palace Museum’s official visitor information for reservations and current opening notices. The museum is normally closed on Mondays, except public holidays.
- Getting your bearings
- The official visitor guide directs entry through the Meridian Gate (Wumen), on the south side, with exits at the north or east. Its map is a useful companion when planning your visit.
